This is by far the best Wyoming petrified palm slab I’ve ever offered. Don’t let this one get away! This is a rarely seen and highly desirable petrified wood collectible from the desert planes of SW Wyoming. It’s a large and complete trunk cross section from a perfectly preserved petrified palm tree! It’s absolutely fascinating to think the climate could have been warm enough 50+ MYA to grow palm trees in Wyoming but here’s the proof! This is one of the largest and most intricately preserved specimens I’ve ever seen from this forest. The wood grain is faithfully preserved in intricate detail and the shape is perfect — a very nice collectible display specimen! This specimen is the single largest palm I’ve ever seen from Wyoming and judging by the pattern in the agatized rind I’d say it came from near the base of the trunk (root scars are visible in the rind). Here’s an absolutely museum grade Eden Valley petrified wood round cut from the center of a perfectly formed log that’s only rarely seen! The spotted rice grain like surface is the unmistakable wood grain of a palm tree! I had the pleasure of searching for these rarest of Wyoming petrified wood fossils earlier this year and I can tell you that the high prices charged by those who were lucky enough to find one of these difficult to extract specimens aren’t high enough! I found only a few shards in 2 days of looking, but was able to obtain a short log from an old timer who offered one recently and I jumped at the chance! The natural beauty and unmistakable character of palm is always special, but to find it in one of the most prized petrified wood deposits in the US that at this very moment is covered in a blanket of snow is just over the top! Eden Valley is home to some of the best petrified wood in Wyoming, including the Blue Forest. It is a uniquely preserved everglade like bed of small branches and occasional logs in central Wyoming. It’s part of the same “fossil lake” formation that a lot of the best known fossil fish are recovered in. The digging is hot and dusty, but every once in a while you stumble on a real treasure and this little log is one of them! The dark coffee, caramel, blue and black colors the wood is preserved in are characteristic of these specimens, as are the infusions of blue agate that filled the cracks and coated the log! This is a perfectly formed round taken from the center of a fairly large sized log from a palm tree. The Wyoming palms didn’t get as big in diameter as the Texas and Louisiana palms did. This is one of the largest ones you’ll see from this northern deposit. It’s been cut and polished to show off all the gemmy detail from this 50+ million year old treasure captured inside. It took a pretty awesome polish – something we strive to produce on every specimen we put our name on! The spotted cell structure of the wood grain is exceptional in this specimen, and easily studied with a hand lens. This is a very nice sized specimen, and it is close to perfect – something that will show proudly in any collection. It measures 12 1/4″ x 10″ across the polished face and is sliced about 3/4 thick.
