The external detail of this log is among the finest I’ve ever seen from anywhere! It looks like a weathered fence post until you touch it and realize it’s solid stone! This is easily one of the most fascinating pieces in our offerings right now and a true collectible by any measure. This choice petrified log features not only exceptionally preserved fossil wood structure detail, but also some of the best silicification you’ll find in this petrified forest! There are gorgeous subtle shades of very dark olive green and dark oily brown laced through the highly agatized, mirror polished face of this premium grade specimen log! It shows very well preserved and detailed fossil wood texture around most of the outer husk of the fossil including several large knots that distinguish this trunk from others more commonly found in this deposit! The growth structure of this amazingly well preserved and complete fossil log is revealed in the mirror polished face where both annual rings and some very fine rays are bold and beautiful in the mirror polished agate face. It’s almost unfathomable how much time has passed since this stone was a tree, but its story is there for you to hold in your hand now millions of years later! It’s a truly fascinating 100% natural work of ancient art! The hollow sprocket like pith would suggest it is more likely a tree from the Dadoxylon genus, but positive identification in this case will take better reference materials than I have, and undoubtedly more expertise. The pith does appear to have been hollow, though mineralization has now filled that void. It is clearly distinct from the Woodworthia more commonly found at this site in any event. One of the prettiest and most striking fossils you’ll ever see in petrified wood. This isn’t one of those dull, lifeless import finished pieces either. This log has been ground flat on our laps and polished to a mirror perfect shine in our shop to reveal all of the gemmy beauty hidden inside this amazing fossil. One of my all time favorites in a wonderful collector size specimen! In the last couple of years I’ve started seeing some really fascinating petrified wood coming into the US at the big import shows from Zimbabwe, Africa! The wood is typically green, brown and black and exceptionally well preserved on the exterior. The interior reminds me of a lot of the Utah wood in detail i. It’s hit and miss but the best known Woodworthia pieces show beautiful spike knots leading up to the spine bases that coat the exterior logs. You’d recognize these specimens anywhere as the logs are consistently the same colors inside and out, and the exterior is coated with an unmistakable pattern of spine scars. The wood grain itself varies in quality, but the best of these pieces show spike knots in cross section (they look like rays coming from the center of the log) and a good cut will show several of them. This log is distinct from it’s temporal cousins found in the same deposit, and it’s ultimate identification remains a mystery. I’ve saved a similar specimen for my own collection and will happily compare notes as more information becomes available over time with the collector who obtains this piece. This wood is quite unique and really a much more interesting fossil than most of the woodworthia we get here in the US. The hints of green color are something you have to see in person to understand – it’s not really comparable to any other petrified wood and it’s difficult to get a representative photograph that really does the color justice. The wood has a reasonably high silica content so we’re able to coax a nice polish out of the specimen. This is one of the few complete rounds I was able to locate that really took a nice polish. If the timeless mystery of this piece isn’t enough for you, then I’m certain the simple, natural, gemmy beauty of it will be. The colors are dark and subtle, and the wood grain is unique to this exotic species. This is a full, complete section from a whole log. It’s really a nice piece, but what else would you expect from a business named “Sticks-in-Stones”? ! We’ve applied all of our considerable lapidary skills to bring out a mirror finish and produce a specimen worthy of display in your own collection. This piece measures about 3 5/8″ x 2 3/4″” across the polished face and is about 9 5/8″ long. Weight is about 7.66 lbs. The item “SiS MY BEST QUALITY 7.7 lb.
