Petrified Wood McDermitt Oregon Petrified Algae Specimen Polished Slice
Following is the original listing. I found a couple of more of these amazing and unique slabs in the shop and those botryoidal cavities are among the best yet! This is one of the most oddly preserved McDermitt rounds I have ever seen! This piece comes from an area in the McDermitt caldera that preserved the logs entombed there very differently from most of the McDermitt fossilized trees. These logs are colored differently and show what appears to be an algae cast on the outside. It almost appears that the log was going to decide to be a cast instead of petrifying, and then changed its mind! It’s definitely a collector piece, both because of the interesting preservation and the unique colors of this very agate rich specimen. The growth structure shows a hardwood with what appear to be diffuse pores, but it is not quite clear enough to pick out a species. With our mirror polish bringing this specimen back to life, you are free to study details like this through a wet looking shine that doesn’t have the slightest hint of a single scratch. The Green Algae Dig Site. In the Oregon Nevada border area. This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a desolate sagebrush desert that spans over 100 square miles on the Oregon/Nevada border. It’s a slice from an ancient hardwood, with absolutely gorgeous gem quality agate in warm, natural wood tones preserving this ancient fossil. The exterior is an unusual combination of green and white and seems to contain a lot of opal, quite distinct from most of the wood found in this area. The inside, however, is a richly colored array of gem quality agate that preserved the wood grain beautifully albeit in a jumbled arrangement! The color accents in this fine specimen make it a beautiful as well as scientifically interesting specimen! This excellent round comes from one of Oregon’s premier petrified wood deposits known to collectors the world over. If you don’t have a specimen from this area, this would be a dandy to get you acquainted!! This specimen has been carefully polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. It took a beautiful polish and is stronger than it looks! It’s another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! This round measures 6 3/4 in diameter and is cut approx. It weighs 0.78 lbs.
