This is a rarely seen and but absolutely beautiful petrified wood collectible from the desert canyons of SW Wyoming. This piece comes from a very high quality estate collection that we had the opportunity to assist with recently and it represents one of the finest examples of these visually stunning gem fossils that you’ll ever see! It’s a gorgeous, complete trunk section from a perfectly preserved petrified beech tree! This piece is gemmy all the way through and has one of the most elegant contorted shapes you’ll see in a log or large limb. There is a single large branch knot at the bend in this log that show the telltale radial wood grain of a beech, but the real beauty is in the cut and dome polished end of the log. The wood grain bursts to life in a stunning display of medullary rays in rich, warm color! This is one of the largest and most intricately preserved limbs of this rarely seen material that I’ve ever handled from this forest and the only log of this size I’ve ever offered for sale. The wood grain is faithfully preserved in intricate detail and the shape is virtually perfect — a very nice collectible display specimen! That exterior has weathered just right to show the wood structure of the trunk perfectly including a fascinating combination of exposed cambium and fossil bark! This piece came from an estate with one of the best collections I’ve ever seen. There’s not another one coming – a one time offering from an estate collection that I’ve agreed to assist with. This really is an absolutely museum grade petrified wood specimen! I had the pleasure of searching for these rarest of Wyoming petrified wood fossils once many years ago and I can tell you that the high prices charged by those who were lucky enough to find one of these difficult to locate specimens aren’t high enough! I found only scraps during an entire day of searching. This one is better than any I’d ever seen previously and something that deserves to be displayed in a world class collection. The natural beauty and unmistakable character of this gem fossil is always special, but to find it in one of the lesser known petrified wood deposits in the US that at this very moment is covered in a blanket of snow is just over the top! It’s been cut and polished on one end to show off all the gemmy detail from this 50+ million year old treasure captured inside. The base is also cut flat so that it stands erect as shown in the photo. It took a pretty awesome polish that shows the wood structure and gemmy preservation in amazing detail! The radial structure of the wood grain is exceptional in this specimen, and easily studied with a hand lens. This is a very hefty sized specimen, and it is close to perfect – something that will show proudly in any collection.
