At nearly 9 tall and weighing over 16 lbs. This is by far the most dramatic, extra-large set of Arizona petrified wood bookends I’ve offered from this amazing fossil log! This wood comes from the northern part of the vast petrified forests in that state and is actually a double fossil. The bold color pattern you see in this magnificent natural artwork is called tigerwood – a relatively uncommon variant found in the massive petrified forests in Arizona. We’re all familiar with the spectacular color of the rainbow wood, but the dark black veins of color radiating through the dark chocolate, cherry, white and chestnut colored growth rings in this gem grade fossil wood are one of the most unique displays of color you’ll ever see in petrified wood. It’s hard to believe that a tree was slowly converted into the amazing display of color and gemstone that you see now in the span of about 200 million years!! This beautiful fossil wood is cut from the most unique examples of tigerwood I’ve ever seen. These are particularly nice because they contain a secondary fossil. The pink eye shaped structures you see clearly near the rind were a type of fungus that grew on these trees like giant banana shaped mushrooms. Because they are cut thick, you can even see part of the torpedo shape on the rind. It’s a large and functional set of bookends cut from a section of an enormous log. It’s some of the most colorful wood I’ve seen come from this famous petrified forest. This medium sized set has very impressive presence and would look amazing as a mantel piece, on a bookshelf, desk or table! This petrified wood is from what is arguably the most famous petrified wood deposit around – the great Arizona Petrified Forest! Don’t worry, this wood was mined (as it still is today) from a private ranch near Holbrook, AZ, not pirated away from the National Monument. The problem with being famous is the folklore that follows I suppose. The reason this wood is so famous is pretty clearly demonstrated in this gorgeous specimen. Arizona wood (Rainbow Wood as it is sometimes called) is just filled with rich colors, often dominated by red, orange, purple, yellow and black but covering every color in the rainbow! This lovely specimen is a very attractive and unusually patterned variant found only occasionally in a few deep dig sites. It’s a very richly colored log that really shows the wood grain and color off better than some of the giant display pieces often will! We select only the showiest pieces of petrified wood to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100% functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on – but there’s nothing there except rock!! This is the only set of really red bookends we have cut from this location so don’t miss this fabulous natural treasure! This is a really big sized set. Each half measures about 9″ tall by 7″ wide at the widest spot on the polished face. They’re cut roughly 1.7 thick. Weight for this set is about 16.16 lbs. Which makes these bookends suitable for books like novels, and the typical text book or even encyclopedias. The item “SiS MY BEST 16 lb.
