SiS RARE ESTATE FIND! HUGE 26 Knotty Oregon Fossil Pine Petrified Wood Round
This is the single largest petrified wood round I’ve ever offered from the John Day area. I’ve seen even larger logs in situ in that part of the state, but most of them are very soft and poorly silicified, or very fractured. This incredible specimen is an exception to all of those trends. It’s a very highly agatized slab cut from a remarkably cleanly preserved fossil pine. The large knots in the face make it look like something you’d see in a western or outdoor motif in a piece of furniture until you get a glimpse of the glassy sheen and realize it’s gemstone! Somewhere along the line Jim Leicht tracked this one down and he added it to his amazing collection. The lapidary artist that prepared it did a fine job of extracting a mirror finish from the polished surface. This would make a truly remarkable, one of a kind coffee table or can be wall mounted as a piece of natural art. The growth rings are clearly visible to the naked eye and show tiny dots of contrasting color that reveal the growth structure in amazing detail, even to the naked eye. It’s a virtually perfectly preserved and flawless slab through the entire, thick, nicely shaped specimen. As I’ve never even seen one of this caliber before it’s safe to say you won’t encounter one like this again!! As unique and collectible as they come! NOTE: This specimen was acquired by Jim Leicht and became part of his amazing collection. The tags on the back were placed there by Jim and I’ve left them there for posterity and provenance. This is a truly amazing, beautifully prepared petrified wood specimen that has been cut and prepared with skill. This slab was part of the Jim Leicht estate collection. Jim lived in the foothills of Mt. During his long collecting career he amassed not one but two world class petrified wood collections. But even his sphere collection filled with petrified wood and his tastes and interests shifted again to the pursuit of world class petrified wood collector pieces. This piece comes from that second collecting effort which itself spanned more than 30 years. I had the good privilege of knowing Jim and we’d trade from time to time for pieces neither of us could live without. This slab is one of the few pieces from that collection to finally make it back into circulation for a new collector to cherish. Jim collected petrified wood from all over the world but, like many, was particularly fond of the gem grade wood found in the Pacific Northwest. I visited Jim’s collection a few times over the years and always admired the breadth of his incredible specimens. Those of us who knew him will miss his friendly, passionate view of both the hobby and those who participate in it. The bulk of his collection remains in the hands of another private collector who has asked me to assist with offering a few duplicates to balance the collection. This really is an absolutely museum grade petrified round cut from the center of a perfectly formed log that’s got a lot of wood growth structure detail perfectly preserved within the log forever frozen in stone. The wood preservation is exceptional with the most stunning wood grain you’ll ever see in one of these pieces! The John Day, Oregon, area produced some absolutely massive logs but this is by far the prettiest and cleanest specimen I’ve ever seen come from that part of the state. Most are much softer and much less silicified than this gemstone masterpiece! The large knots combined with the wood grain make this one easy to recognize as a massive pine and the polish reveals every detail just beautifully. This giant piece is a true collectible that you may never see anything even remotely similar again! The wood is richly colored and exquisitely preserved, definitely some of the best Oregon fossil pine I’ve seen and truly a museum grade masterpiece of natural art! This is a perfectly flat slice from the center of a truly massive petrified log. It’s been cut and polished to show off all the gemmy detail from this 10+ million year old treasure captured inside. It took a pretty awesome polish – something we strive to produce on every specimen we put our name on! Cell structure and annual rings of the wood grain are exceptionally clear and easily studied with a hand lens. This massive beauty is gorgeous and highly polished. It measures about 25 7/8″ wide and is about 20 1/2″ high. It is cut roughly 1.2 thick and weighs 37.4 lbs. A nice, unique naturally wonderful stone collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary. The item “SiS RARE ESTATE FIND!
