SiS FLAWLESS 7 LOG END CUT Petrified Birch Wood Sweet Home, OR
This gorgeous petrified log is one of the finest I’ve ever seen come from the Sweet Home petrified forest. It’s an immaculately preserved petrified birch (or something very similar to it) with the kind of finely detailed microscopic structure that makes this petrified wood deposit a favorite among fossil wood collectors. This particular log heel is also very beautiful with desiccation cracks that are naturally filled with blue agate that looks amazing in the dark coffee colored fossilized wood. This one also has more petrified bark on it than is typically found on petrified wood – you can clearly see the entire bark layer remains on almost the entire log. But even more impressive is the amazing growth ring preservation in this incredible, hefty trunk. It’s a dense, heavy log with an amazing texture on the side and back. It’s a diffuse porous hardwood that most closely resembles modern yellow birch in my reference materials. Polished to a mirror finish on the cut face to reveal all of the wood structure and beautiful color contained in this amazing fossil! You won’t see a finer example from the Sweet Home petrified forest! We made a very lucky strike last a few years back near Sweet Home, Oregon. There are a few pockets of absolutely outstanding petrified wood in the hills in that part of the state. The wood that is found there is typically very, very agatized and extremely well detailed. Like other specimens from the Pacific Northwest, it’s some of the finest to be found anywhere in the world!! The Sweet Home deposit is particularly famous because of the huge variety of tree species that can be found there. I read an article once that said over 60 distinct species had been identified in various locations from this vast deposit! It’s not too difficult to locate good lapidary quality chunks in these hills, but complete limbs and logs are the real prize – and are much harder to come across! This exceptional log is a very dense, slow growing hardwood. It’s a diffuse porous species, but I can’t say with absolute certainty which variety as there are actually several hardwoods of this general structure that look similar under magnification in cross section. This piece is cut from a section of log from a hardwood tree that we found on that trip. It was one of the finest logs we recovered in a very productive day of hunting. This is a well preserved , nicely colored, fracture free specimen. The detail both internally and externally is very good! The tree rings are tight and well defined, and preserved in a coffee & cream colored agate that really took a nice polish. The exterior rind is perfectly preserved in color, grain and texture – it is really beautiful in its own right. It has been cut with a diamond saw then sanded and polished to a mirror finish. It doesn’t show in the photo, but it has a beautiful lustre that just makes this natural work of art a thing of awesome beauty! Measures about 7″ across the polished face and about 2 3/4″ long. Weight is 4.84 lbs. A nice, unique natural wonder collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary.
