Petrified Wood – Woodpecker Hole – Fossil Tree Fluorescent Display – Wyoming. You are looking at an amazing piece of petrified wood from the Shirley Basin, Wyoming. This very large piece is just a small piece of a great tree, possibly sequoia. It was found in the bed of a gently flowing stream and has both very well preserved woodgrain and has been water worn and smoothed on one side. One of the unique features of this specimen is a clearly defined hole, most likely created by a woodpecker or similar species of bird. The colors of the original wood are well preserved, although there are also areas of bright color caused by mineralization. This piece is partially agatized and fluoresces brightly in beautiful colors. It is a spectacular display specimen and will make a great addition to your collection. Weight: approximately 300 lbs or 134 Kg We have not been able to place this on a scale. Measurements 18″ x 21″ x 23. Images showing the fluorescence were taken under LW 375nm UV lighting. The camera makes the images appear more blue and the reds less intense than in person. Petrified wood is a fossil formed when a tree or tree-like plant is buried in an environment that is free of oxygen which prevents decay. Water flowing through the environment and tissues of the buried tree or plant slowly deposits minerals, replacing the cells and tissues with stone. Silica, calcite, pyrite, agate and even opal can be part of the stone left behind. Details of the bark, wood, and even cellular structure are often preserved. A piece of petrified wood may retain such detail of the original structure that it is difficult to differentiate it from modern wood without touching it. In the practice of Reiki and other healing traditions, petrified wood has the properties of increasing energy and memory, and grounding and stabilizing emotions, It is used in investigating past-life experiences and is considered to be useful in business success. Petrified wood is also believed to be healing to skin, muscles and the circulatory system. It is used to energize the Root and Heart Chakras.
