Beautiful Petrified Wood Specimen Slab Near Gingko State Park Vantage Washington. Please Read This Entire Description. Spectacular slab from outside Gingko Petrified Forest State Park in Vantage, Wa. Beautiful features and exceptional bark. Please check the pics carefully. I tried to get the best angles I could. Originally, these came from a man who told me how he grew up on a farm near Vantage. In the 50s and 60s, he and his dad would commonly find logs. He’s said he and his dad would load them in their truck and cut them at home. These were not found in the State Park or in any area illegal to harvest such items. He also said that he would find them on neighbor’s private property with permission. Numerous species have been found petrified in the immediate area. Many literally embedded in basalt lava from layers and layers of flows. How they did not incinerate is a bit of a mystery but there are generally accepted hypotheses in the field. Videos are on YT with some great ones by Prof. Nick Zentner of Central Washington University. I believe the petrified wood in this area averages 15 mya. According to statistics and geologic time frames. This exceptional slice is amazing in that it shows some of the tightest, closest tree rings of any tree I’ve ever seen. I have a horticultural and nursery background and I’ll say that this tree was extreeeemly slow growing. As slow as it gets. In the region this came from, there were many species. The number is debatable. The vast majority of the trees and plants discovered so far there were relatively slow to fast growing. The Gingko Biloba tree, to this day, is known as one of the slowest growing deciduous trees on Earth. It still thrives as it is very hearty and tough as well as being disease and insect resistant. I cannot guarantee anything but the ring pattern of slow growth leads me to believe that this slab may actually be Gingko. Apparently, to date, there have only been 4 Gingko trees EVER discovered. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. There have been approximately 50 species of plants discovered at the Gingko/Wanapum State Park Site. The man and his wife I aquired these from said that they were Gingko. He grew up there, he collected them with his dad. I have a couple other slabs but I can’t find anybody in the scientific world that can identify the species of this and other pieces I have. Must be a very niche skill. The piece measures 9 1/2 wide. It is approximately 11/16 thick. Weighs 2 lb 6.5 oz. It is not polished in the traditional sense. Has amazing potential if polished. Or leave as is. It’s remarkable either way.
