This is by far one of the largest and most dramatic Deschutes River Canyon petrified oak specimens I’ve had the chance to offer in a free standing sculpture in a long time. This huge oak log cross section would look wonderful on a real oak mantle! The color is natural and warm, classic for the Deschutes petrified oak logs. The chaos you see at the top is actually a massive agate filled knot, the stub of which is very clearly visible and well preserved in the top of the sculpture in the natural rind! Just look at that beautiful wood grain!! This is a massive sized and impressive sculpture in one of our most prized petrified woods, and of course the face is mirror polished to really make it stand out for the beautiful natural fossil artwork that it is! These logs are increasingly scarce and only getting scarcer. It’s a wonderful chance at one of the best petrified oak specimens you’re likely to ever see from the Deschutes River Canyon! The Deschutes River Canyon is one of Oregon’s classic petrified oak collecting areas that is, for the most part, no longer available to rockhounds to hunt on. What exists in the collections of old timers is all that is likely to ever be available for collectors. This desolate Central Oregon canyon has produced some of the finest fossil oak trees ever found anywhere, rivaled only by the Stinking Water specimens of far Eastern Oregon. The incredible preservation of the red and white oak trees combined with the gorgeous colors make this one of the most sought after fossil woods in our state where we have a lot to choose from! This exceptional specimen was found in the “rock pile” of one of the most coveted rock estate sales to come along in decades! This standup specimen is classic Deschutes with the coffee, brown, gold and black colors and the characteristic wood grain so perfectly preserved. Like most of the Oregon petrified oak wood, this piece is very highly agatized! The high agate content means that this piece has polished up beautifully. Just look at that reflection in the face! It’s just amazing how beautiful petrified wood can be when properly polished, and the fine oak specimens found in this remote desert location are among the finest in the world. This piece has fabulous medullary rays (the spoke like rays so prominent in oak trees) that spread out in a fan shaped pattern to easily identify the species. The heart is present in this piece, centered by the pattern of the rays. The wood grain is very visible in this piece both in the mirror polished agate inside and the white, ash preserved exterior. This is a nice, hefty specimen from what must have been an absolutely gigantic oak tree! This is one of the larger standups we’ve done from this location, and the cut makes it suitable for display on a mantle or table. This piece stands about 7 1/2 tall and measures approx. 12 3/4 wide across the polished face. It’s about 4 1/4 deep at the base. Weight is 18.12 lbs.
